Strategic Planning

According to Webster, Strategic Planning is "the science or art of employing the political, economic, psychological and corporate resources of an organization to afford maximum support and achievement of adopted policies." In short, Strategic Planning is the continuous process of designing a desired future state with the best possible data. During periods of fundamental change, the future cannot be determined by simply extrapolating the present forward. Organizations must start with the desired future and work back to the present. Scans of the internal and external environment provide the data necessary for planning a strategic future and the plans to achieve that future.

Why Implement a Strategic Planning Process?

Strategic planning is a significant element in most quality management systems and is required by some regulatory bodies. The planning process allows an organization to analytically evaluate what factors or trends may occur in the future and develop a plan to incorporate or address those issues. The plan provides a tangible set of milestones and actions that give staff members clear direction, improving both staff morale and resource allocation. Evaluation of internal and external factors allows the organization to confirm strengths and competencies and identify areas of weaknesses. Ultimately the strategic planning process should identify new areas of opportunity and growth and enhance long-term viability of the organization.
